Origin of eiderdown
Eiderdown is one of the most exclusive and valuable raw materials in the world. This down is not obtained from farmed animals but collected after wild eider ducks have left their nests.
The eiderdown processed at Schlossberg comes from a small Icelandic island. Every spring, eider ducks breed there in the windy, harsh climate of the Nordic Sea. To protect their small eggs, the females line their nests with down. After the little eider ducks hatch, the families migrate back to the sea and spend most of their time on the water. The valuable down is then collected by specialized eider farmers using pure craftsmanship. It takes up to 60 nests to obtain 1 kg of pure eider down.
The harvested down is then cleaned and sorted on the mainland. This is also done by meticulous craftsmanship to avoid damaging the down. The quality of the eiderdown is checked on site in Iceland and additionally sealed before the precious goods finally make their way to Switzerland.
